Maxwell is a children’s book author and the Founder of JonAyves Learning Club, a personalized learning organization that teaches children concepts such as long division as early as the age of 3. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and is certified as a Professional in Human Resources (PHRi). As a former musician, sharing stages with Beyoncé and the Rolling Stones, leading a child care organization as CEO, and working as a consultant for e-commerce tech companies globally, Maxwell values the need to "fill the industry gaps" by way of disruption and modern solutions.

What is the Brantford Spelling Bee?

Welcome to Brantford's Premier Spelling Bee Championship, proudly presented by JonAyves Learning Club in partnership with the esteemed Brantford Public Library.

 

We invite you to register your child in participating in this captivating contest!

 

Using our curriculum-based levels (beginning with White JAM), this highly anticipated event gathers young wordsmiths from across Brantford to exhibit their language acumen. Participants embark on a journey through the labyrinth of language, showcasing their linguistic finesse and exemplary sportsmanship.

 

Join us for an inspiring showcase of brilliance, dedication, and the power of words!

Spelling Bee Times:

Event Schedule for January 27th, 2024

​

Grades 3-4 Segment (12:00 PM - 2:00 PM)


- 12:00 PM - 12:10 PM: Opening Introduction, Sponsor Acknowledgment, and Rule Presentation.
- 12:10 PM - 12:30 PM: Written Segment (20 words appropriate for grade level), followed by prize distribution for top performers.
- 12:30 PM - 12:40 PM: Collection of Papers for Grading, Preparation for Oral Segment.
- 12:40 PM - 1:40 PM: Oral Segment and Trophy Presentation to the Winner.
- 1:40 PM - 1:50 PM: Announcement of Written Segment Winners and Prize Distribution.
- 1:50 PM - 2:00 PM: Closing Remarks and Goodbyes.

Lunch Break

Grades 5-6 Segment (2:30 PM - 4:30 PM)


- 2:30 PM - 2:40 PM: Event Introduction, Gratitude to Sponsors, and Rule Overview.
- 2:40 PM - 3:00 PM: Written Segment (20 words suitable for the grade level) with prizes for the top scorers.
- 3:00 PM - 3:10 PM: Submission of Written Works for Grading, Setup for Oral Segment.
- 3:10 PM - 4:10 PM: Oral Segment and Crowning of the Winner.
- 4:10 PM - 4:20 PM: Announcement and Prize Giving for Written Segment Winners.
- 4:20 PM - 4:30 PM: Final Thanks and Event Conclusion.

Brantford Junior Spelling Bee

Part 1 - Written Segment Rules

Overview

 

The spelling bee is divided into two parts - the written segment and the oral segment. This section explains the written segment, which happens first for each grade group.


Number of Words: 20


Prizes: Top participants with the highest scores will receive prizes from JonAyves Learning Club and local sponsors.


Results Announcement: The results of this segment will be revealed at the end of the event, following the oral segment.
 


Rules and Guidelines
 


1. Eligibility:


- This segment is the initial part of the Brantford Junior Spelling Bee, open to all registered contestants.

2. Test Format:


- Contestants will be given 20 words to spell on their answer sheet.
- Each word will be read aloud and used in a sentence for context.

3. Time Allocation:

 

- Participants will have 30 seconds to spell each word after it is pronounced.

4. Answer Sheets:


- Only provided answer sheets should be used.
- Contestants must write their name and grade at the top.
- Spelling should be written in the numbered spaces as per the word order.

5. Scoring:


- Each correct spelling earns one point, with a maximum score of 20 points.
- Spelling accuracy is essential for scoring.

6. Determining Winners:


- Winners will be those with the highest scores.
- In case of a tie, the tied scores will stand; no tie-breaker rounds will be conducted.

7. Prizes:


- Prizes are provided by JonAyves Learning Club and local businesses.
- Top scorers will receive these prizes.

8. Prohibited Actions:


- No dictionaries, electronic devices, or external assistance allowed.
- Cheating, including communication with others or copying, leads to disqualification.

9. Answer Sheet Submission:


- Contestants must remain seated and raise their hand to submit their answer sheet.

10. Judging:


- Answer sheets will be graded based on accuracy by judges.
- Judges' decisions are final.

11. Participant Conduct:


- Maintaining silence and order during the test is mandatory.
- Disruptive behavior will re
sult in disqualification.

12. Emergency Procedures:


- Follow the instructions of event organizers and venue emergency protocols.

Brantford Junior Spelling Bee

Part 2 - Oral Segment Rules

​

Overview
 

This section explains the oral segment, which happens after the written segment for each grade group.

​

1. Eligibility:


- Open to all contestants registered for the Brantford Junior Spelling Bee.

​

2. Event Sequence:


- Contestants will be called to the stage in a predetermined order to spell words orally.

​

3. Word Announcement:


- The pronouncer will say the word, use it in a sentence, and repeat the word.
- Contestants may request the word to be repeated, defined, or used in a different sentence.

​

4. Response Time:


- Participants must begin spelling within 30 seconds of the word being pronounced.

​

5. Spelling Procedure:


- Contestants should pronounce the word before and after spelling it.
- Starting over is allowed, but the sequence of letters already spoken cannot be changed.

​

6. Elimination:


- Incorrectly spelling a word results in elimination from the competition.

​

7. Judging:


- The judges will confirm the correctness of the spellings.
- Decisions made by the judges are final.

​

8. Progression:


- The competition continues until only a few contestants remain.
- Words become more challenging as the rounds advance.

​

9. Declaring the Winner:


- The last contestant standing who correctly spells a word will be declared the winner.

​

10. Prizes:


- Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runners-up.

​

11. Behavior Expectations:


- Contestants are expected to maintain respectful and sportsmanlike behavior.
- Disruptive behavior may lead to disqualification.

12. Emergency Protocols:


- Follow the venue’s emergency protocols and instructions from the organizers.
